    K&B electric outboard conversion?

    Hi

I'm planning to build an F1 tunnel hull with a K&B electric outboard conversion and need some expert help please.....

I checked a few website and it seems that they sell only complete nitro engines.

If you've done it can you please help me in terms:

    1. What are the parts I need to get for the K&B electric outboard conversion?
    2. Some pictures would be greatly appreciated.

My choice for the K&B outboard is mainly because of durability. It uses a teflon liner in the stuffing box and can be replaced unlike others.... It also should be able to handle a brushless motor.

    Thanks

i have done two. i used a piece of steel and wood to make a motor mount and have them extended for the servo arms. then bored out the middle for the collet and chopped off alot of dead weight.

Not sure how much help this will be, but when I converted my Lawless 3.5 drive to Brushless, I just made a plate like the one shown in this picture and spaced it up on standoffs... Works perfectly so far... Just make sure to keep the cable lubed and also flood the motor with Corrosion-X at the end of the day...

K&B Outboards have been the FE standard for conversions for some time... I'll see if I can get one of my club-mates to post some pics of his. He has several that work great...

          Hi guys

Thanks for the great pictures. They will be very helpful for me to prepare my shopping list for MECOA.http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...et2/banana.gif

They all look great and the the servo connectors are very interesting.

I have considered a few outboard before deciding for the K&B (by the way I love your TS2 conversion thread Darin.....). Both the Fuller's and BBY outboard are very attractive. The main reason I'm going for the K&B is because they use a teflon liner.

I supppose that there is a lot of frictions and wear and tear inside the stuffing box between the latter and the flex cable. The K&B should be more durable as a the teflon liner can simply be change when it gets thin. Is that correct? Can you tell me about your expereinces and thoughts?

For the motor I'm thinking about the SV27 motor and ESC. For the Hull I'm still undecided between H&M Skater or Aeromarine Predator......

This would be my first outboard but I have a SV27 and 2 MHZ boats. I'm using the Aquacrat SV27 motor and ESC in my MHZ Boat eco and this things is a funny rocket and turns on a dime.....

              Hi everybody

Can you help me in choosing the K&B outboard suitable for conversion to FE?

They have 3 models 3.5cc engines:

              1. Product id 8907
              2. Product id 8935
              3. Product id 8950

Which one should I buy for the conversion?

              Thanks a lot.

              Jerome

You really don't need a K&B unit. I actually advise against using that particular lower end since it is at 90deg. I have been using the REK lower end and there is nothing you have to do to modify it. It is strong enough for high end brushless power also. Email Rich at rekmachine.com and he will send you his price list. I recommend the alum coupler also. Inexpensive and no mods necessary. The only thing I did was sand the skeg a bit thinner. Oh and cut the motor shaft down slightly for clearance.

                  Thanks

Now I'm getting very interested with the REK unit also.

I was told that there is a brass tubing molded inside the lower leg. Can it be replaced eventually when it gets worn out or is it permanently fixed to the lower leg? Has anybody tried to get the tubing out?

I'm concerned about the durability as the flex shaft is curved 90% and there must be a lot of friction and wear and tear inside.....

                  Thanks for your reply

The REK unit has a brass stuffing tube. I would beleive it to be near impossible to remove without damaging the lower end. I have ran mild to hot motors on it and have experienced no problems. As I stated earlier telfon is not necessary and could be more of a headache than what it's worth. With the REK unit I grease the shaft with mercury cable grease and then squirt in corrosion X to thin it out a bit. I also apply the corrosion x to the motor and lower end after every run. There is a small hole in the lower end that allows a small tube (like on cans of WD-40 and corrosion x) to fit it. It is one of the easiest maintenance boats I have. And the REK unit is not at 90deg. It is between a K&B and Lawless angle.
