    Motor Leads

What is the main advantage of shortening the wires from my motor to my ESC? I notice alot of pictures of Fast Electric boats have wires as short as possible, my wires are about 6" long from the factory. My motor is a
    36-60 size 1604kv.

First question: which brand of motor?
Short wires are preferred whether it is between the batteries and the ESC and /or ESC and the motor. It helps the ESC to stay cooler and last longer are among several benefits.
However, before you get your wire cutter and snip away, you need to know that shortening the wires ( leads) from the motors are usually avoided because on many of the motors the wires ( leads) are part of the lacquered copper wire strands from the stator. If cut, they are extremely difficult to tin and solder to any connectors. It is not impossible, but you will regret. (It is difficult to get the lacquer off, you need to sand, scrape each individual wire completely IN EACH STRAND) There are exceptions, like the Castle Creations 15xx , 17xx motors, where the leads are long and the manufacturer explicitly says "OK to Shorten". because these leads are truly electrical wires and they are easy to tin and solder. You can feel the difference, these true wires are soft where as the other type is very stiff.
You can shorten as much as possible on the ESC's side to the motor wires.
Of more importance is the length between the batteries to the ESC, those you need to watch, I try to keep them less than 8" total length if I have no choice , shorter is always better and you should make every effort to keep them that way.

Not sure of the brand of the motor. It came already installed, the boat is a HobbyKing Princess.

I am sure it is the common type. If you want to be sure, just feel the stiffness of the leads. If they are more stiff than the wires coming out of your ESC, than it is confirmed. As I said, the leads from the CC motors are soft, they are insulated by high grade silicone thus very pliable vs. the "common type " which is just heat shrink wrapped.

The main reason for short wires is to reduce amp loss..............your power!
NEED PARALLEL CONNECTORS?? QUALITY 5.5MM, 8MM, 8 AND 10 AWG, GET THEM HERE: http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...est!&highlight=

The wires on the motor fitted in the Princess are part of the windings ( stiff wires ) so don't cut them.

Thanks for all the input. Not going to cut them. If anyone has a Princess, i would like to see a pic of your installed electronics, just to compare how you mounted everything.Im running a 4s front to back on the battery tray that was preinstalled. With a Seaking 180a ESC. Pond is still froze, cant wait to take it out for its maiden voyage.

I missed this thread and cut my wires too short . I used a Dremel wire disk wheel to take off the isolating material on the wires. What a pain !
