This should be an easy one and I figure you guys would know. I have seen these used on helis but was never sure what they were for so does anyone know why ferrite rings are used and how they should be strung?

Ferrite rings are used most of the times as RF filters to filter out unwanted electrical noise. On your PC cords that is what the thing object around the wire by the plug is. -
If you have long servo extention (around 20") you have to put some ferrite, because the servo extention act like an antenna, a receiver compared micro voltage arriving at the antenna with the battery 0volt reference, but the wire that brings the 0V to the servo also "receive" the signal from transmitter so in some cases the receiver doesn't have any reference because the reference is equal to the signal and give radio trouble, this is very common use in large RC plane where extention are sometimes 40" long!...
That's how I've been explained by some expert long time ago when I started with giant scale plane!Comment
