In my next project I am going to build an 1/8 electric hydro. I am open for suggestion on the best motor esc combination for this.

Are you intending to race this within a particular organization? Some has specific rules for motor and batteries which limit what you can select.Tyler Garrard

I assume you will not be formally racing this hydro but instead doing some fun running. What voltage do you plan to use? What hull? What are your speed and run time expectations? Your budget? To fully enjoy a model of this size you will need a fairly large pond which is not too windy or rough.

Do the Kiwi's have the same rules as the Aussie's? 1P only?

Hi Barry
I plan to build a 1/8 to compete in Suha (NZ) racing next year. Mostly they run 10s setups here and NEU motors are popular, but I have a more limited budget so a TP power motor will probably be a goer. I have a couple of smaller TPs and they go well. The aquacraft 240A should be ok, or perhaps a swordfish 240A. At the end of the day your budget and prferences are what will determine the choice. Cheaper motors etc have been run in the past with success, but like with any boat the setup, prop, etc will all be important factors in how well it runs. Your current direction however should get you racing/ having fun. You can always upgrade in a year or two.NZMPBA 2013, 2016 Open Electric Champion. NZMPBA 2016 P Offshore Champion.

Check out
for rules.
@Tyler, we can run 2P but most run 1P, maybe more of a budget/room/weight thing.NZMPBA 2013, 2016 Open Electric Champion. NZMPBA 2016 P Offshore Champion.

I've got two 1/8th Sport Hydros both have Swordfish 240 Pro Plus ESCs one has a Leopard 5698 910kv and the other has a Leopard 56110 950kv both are on 10s 2p here's a vid of a little blowover lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQVF...ature=youtu.beComment

Thanks Peter,
A very popular set-up here is the Neu 1527 1.5Y on 10S. You could also run a Castle 2028 on 8S or 10S. Look for a 1527 size motor from HET or Leopard if on a budget and make sure the ESC you purchase is up to the task.

I'm not suggesting that this is the best setup, but to save money I'm running 8s 1p in mine because I have a lot of 4s packs & it was a smallish 1/8 scale at 42". Also to save money I had a Neu 1527/1Y 1250kv motor so I've put that in it with a Swordfish 240A.
A more ideal kv on 8s would be around 1000- 1100kv to drop the revs a bit & use a larger prop.
Here she is testing a Prather s240 prop. I've ended up using a Prather s235 prop now.
