Everyone always asks if I just go to the model boat pond? Lake?


They are always surprised when I tell them we head right for the Surf!






I started with the Kyosho Surfer back in 2002 and by 2003 they stopped selling them and by 2005 I had to put it all away in splinters...


The boyz in Maui could not take that lying down...

Look at these waves...we CAN"T Stop Now!

They decided that if Kyosho wasn't going to sell them any more they would have to learn how to make them!

Here we are eight years later...Still no Production model worth a darn...Scratch Build if you want one!

I got back into it all about 2 years ago. MauiRcSurfer released a 'How to' DVD.

After about a million emails from them they sent one saying they had a Summer Special...19.99

ALL RIGHT ALREADY! I'll flip you 20bucks just to stop th eemails! lol

So the Journey Began...

My current build is #28 and #29....I knew nothing!

Scratch Builders will understand how each build just ets better and better....its an addiction.


Thank goodness for YouTube, SurferSteve.com, OSE, FoamEZ.com, and that DVD...


I start with a Surfboard Blank...



I can get Two boards out of the one blank




60 hours later I can create one board and rider...

yep! the Surfer himself has to be sculpted..



I use scrap pieces of foam left over from the blank...glued together and then sanded, glassed, sanded. painted, and sanded some more...the figure takes about 20 hours.

This year I started using 5S lipos...following the lead of my mentor and now good friend, Maui John.

Leopard 3674 1900kv running 5S
Hifei Swordfish 120A ESC (sometimes I use the cheaper Aquastar version)

water cooling...2 intakes(one for motor, other for ESC) 1 exhaust...i just started using this set up and it keeps everything a lot cooler.

.150 Flexi cable driving a Grim Racer 36 x 55mm prop

Futaba BLS 451 Servo controlling Twin Steering Fins

Fins were modeled after FCS Mr 78 Twin Fins

Finally,

Airtronics MX-3X Radio and receiver.

I get asked a lot of questions while at the beach...I needed a place to send people looking for info...now we have a great place to visit and share photos, videos, stories, and even a little BS

I print up these cards on my inkjet and pass them out to the people I meet


each Surfer has his own card


I try to have fun with it all...one thing for sure ...the questions stop as soon as they know they can go online later...they seem to go back to just enjoying the moment..as do I...
