Brushless motor timing.

No one can give you the magic number as to what timing will be best with your particular setup. They can only guess it.

First, you will have to know if you have a D or Y wind. If you bought the motor from us, you will find it on our product details, normally it's listed next to the motor option, see picture two. If you didn't buy it from OSE, consult with the retailer you purchased it from.

These are the typical ranges used with the current in-runner brushless motors.

Y winds: 5-16 degrees
D winds: 0 degrees

Which exact number will depend on the esc options and the load placed on the motor.

We suggest starting at 0 degrees and working upwards with testing.

This is one of many methods for testing that can be used.

- Drive for 30 seconds or so, and immediately test the motor endbell (not the water jacket) for heat If it's not hot to the touch or if you have a temperature gauge (the best way) and the motor temps are in the 100F range, drive again for 60 seconds, and test again for heat. If the motor is still not hot, keep testing every minute or so until the packs are finished. Never drain lipo cells below 3.2v under load. That can cause a fire.

- If the motor heat is within the 100 to 120f range after your run, you can test a higher timing setting, and increase the timing to the next step that your esc will allow. This will increase the rpm a bit, but will also increase heat and decrease the torque a bit. If you find it getting too hot, reduce the timing.

- If you are running hot after your initial run, it's possible the timing is too high. Try reducing the timing. If the motor heat is still high, there can be a setup issue. Which could include a motor that's possibly too small for the size of the boat. A prop that's larger than the motor can handle. Or even the boat setup dragging too much in the water, causing a higher load, this happens often in hydroplanes and riggers.

Note: We know the picture is not a brushless motor, it was the only good picture we could find with adjustable timing on the motor cam. :-)
